The Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup Chase worth £175,000.00 will hopefully, weather permitting, be run over 3 miles 2 furlongs at Newbury this Saturday (27th). This race was first run in 1957 at Cheltenham, as were the 1958 and 1959 races. There have been some great horses win this race over the years none more so than Denman who will be trying to win it for the third year running. Mill House won it in 1963 and Arkle in 1964 and 1965. In 1966 the handicapper did get the better of Arkle and he was beaten by Stalbridge Colonist who was in receipt of 35lb from Arkle. Arkle carried 12-7 compared to the 10-0 Stalbridge Colonist carried on his back with Stan Mellor to drive him on. This year Denman could also struggle against some of the lower weighted horses. From the same yard as Denman, that of Paul Nicholls, is Neptune Collonges who was last seen running 4th in the 2009 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He suffered a tendon injury in that race and provided he is now fit and well must have a great chance in receipt of 18lb from Denman.
Carruthers (pictured) who will race, like most of the field, off of 10-0 is another who could have a great chance. He ran 4th in the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup and was 23 lengths behind Denman at level weights. He will be in receipt of 26lb from Denman and that should bring them closer together. Carruthers is owned by Lord John Oaksey who, when an amateur rider, Mr John Lawrence, won this race in 1958 on Taxidermist. There would not be a more popular winner if Carruthers came home first.
